Students Decide Keys or Strings in Musical Debate
When it comes to choosing between piano and guitar, students are divided about the instrument that moves them the most. Some value the soft chords of a piano, while others prefer the portability and energy of a guitar.
Most music theory courses begin with piano demonstration.
The informal poll, conducted at UCF’s campus, asked students and staff whether they preferred piano or guitar, either in listening or in practice. Out of 10 responses, the results were evenly split, with each instrument finding strong defenders.
For some students, piano stands as the foundation of all music.
“I love the piano because it feels more versatile,” said Arianna Azanza, 19, health science major. “You can play classical, jazz, pop, anything, and it always sounds complete on its own.”
Reinaldo Benitez, 25, communications major, agreed, emphasizing the piano’s educational role. “I lean toward the piano. The instrument is the foundation of all music theory in a way that helps you branch out to every other instrument.”
Others said the piano’s sound brought more comfort and focus.
“Piano is more relaxing for me. I’ll put on instrumental playlists with piano while I study. It just clears my mind in a way a guitar can’t,” said Logan Ray, 22, radio broadcasting major.
On the other hand, guitar preference also found strong backing.
“Definitely guitar. It’s portable, and you can take it anywhere,” said Erika Gonzalez, 21, psychology major. “Plus, it gives music a raw feeling.”
Erika explained her decision mostly comes from personal experiences. “I grew up with my dad playing acoustic guitar at home. I like how he brought people together anywhere we were.”
Others connected to guitar because of the energy it brings to a room. “Rock, flamenco, it’s always expressive. The piano is beautiful, but guitars are alive!” said Ernesto Lopez, 23, undecided major.
The debate between piano and guitar is hardly new. According to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM), piano remains one of the top instruments for formal instruction, while guitar consistently ranks high in sales due to its affordability. Both continue to dominate in popular music and education.
Whether students preferred piano or guitar, all agreed that music in any form is essential to college life. From Beethoven to Alicia Keys, college students have diverse ways of listening to and interpreting music, whether it comes from a guitar or a piano.
