James Blake
The English singer-songwriter and producer is recognized for his chilling vocals and unique blend of experimental, edm/trap beats. Born on September 26th, 1998, James released his self-titled debut album on February 7, 2011. The project includes themes of love and relationships and the emotional turmoil that results in isolation and loneliness during a time of self discovery. His emotional depth and haunting vocals often resonate with his listeners making him well-regarded within the music industry.
James Blake’s music wasn’t properly introduced to me until sometime in 2023. I was familiar with well-known melodies like “Limit to your Love” and “Retrograde” but after diving into his discography I can confidently rank him as one of my top artists.
Friends That Break Your Heart was released on October 8th, 2021 and stands as James' 5th studio recorded album. The album positions itself as my personal favorite, including features from SZA, JID and more. The title reveals the record being about the pain of a withered friendship and expresses how losing a friend can be just as painful as losing a lover.
Some of my favorite tracks include:
“Show me (feat. Monica Martin)”
“Say What You Will”
